I went to London and Rome in January, and the difference was amazing. It was still busy, but nothing like the summer, which seems to start in April and continue through September in Europe these days. I do like your suggestion to pick the smaller museums and quirky attractions - that's always a good idea...

We did London and Paris in January, and I agree that there were fewer people, but the Louvre and the British Museum were still packed. That's the description of the Rosetta Stone. It was polite-ish, but it was still people shoving to get to the front so they could get a picture. The first time I saw it, years ago(!), it was off to the side, sort of dusty, and I remember stumbling on it and being surprised. It's always been important, but now it's "Famous." Who could want more than that??? :)
